Invisible Text for Discord

An invisible character is a real character that shows nothing on screen, which is how blank nicknames, empty lines in messages and channel names that look like nothing are made. Copy one here and paste it in.

How to use it

Press Copy above.
Paste it where you want the blank. A server nickname, a channel name, or a message.
Save or send.
Check the member list, not the edit box. A nickname can look accepted while you are typing and be tidied on save, so the list down the right-hand side is the view that counts.

Where it works, and where it does not

Discord has two different names, and they behave differently.

Your display name and server nicknames — these accept invisible characters.
Your unique @username — this does not. Discord only allows a small set of ordinary characters there, so there is no trick that works.

Beyond those two, the same character generally goes into channel names, category headers, role names, server names and your custom status. Roles are the one people forget: a role named with a blank still colours your name and still grants its permissions, it simply shows nothing in the sidebar heading.

For an empty line inside a message, put one invisible character on the line you want blank. Discord trims truly empty lines, but a line with a character on it stays.

You are still findable

This hides how your name is drawn. It does not remove you from anything.

Mentions still work. An @mention is stored as your account ID, not as the text of your name, so anyone who has ever mentioned you can still do it and it will still ping you.
Search still finds you. Typing your @username into the member list turns you up regardless of what your nickname looks like.
Moderators still see the account. Audit logs and moderation tools work from the account, not the display name.

What usually goes wrong on Discord

Your @username refuses it. It always will. That name only accepts letters, numbers, dots and underscores, and no character here gets round that. Change your display name or your server nickname instead — those are the ones people actually see.
The nickname saves but shows blank in the member list. That is the trick working. Some servers have a bot that renames anyone with an unreadable name, so check back after a minute.
Your empty line in a message disappeared. Discord removes lines that are truly empty. Put one invisible character on the line and it stays.
A channel name came out with a dash in it. Text channel names are lower-cased and have spaces turned into dashes as you type. If the tidy-up is eating the character too, try another from the list — voice and category names are handled less strictly than text channels.
Your message formatting broke. An invisible character sitting between the asterisks and the word stops Discord seeing them as a pair, so the bold never starts. If markdown suddenly stops working in a line you pasted into, that is usually why.

Many servers run moderation bots that flag blank or unreadable names automatically. This is not against Discord’s rules, but it can be against a particular server’s, and getting kicked from a server is a server decision rather than a Discord one.

Common questions

My @username will not take it.

It never will. That name is limited to ordinary letters, numbers, dots and underscores. Change your display name or server nickname instead — that is the one people actually see.

Can I make a channel look blank?

Often yes, though Discord tidies channel names as you type. If it refuses, try another character from the list above.

Can people still mention me?

Yes. A mention is stored as your account ID rather than as your name, so it keeps working no matter what your nickname looks like. The same goes for direct messages and friend requests.

Can I use one in my custom status?

Generally yes, and it is a common way to leave the status line looking empty rather than removing it. The emoji slot beside it is separate and unaffected.

Why did my bold text stop working?

Almost certainly an invisible character between the asterisks and the word. Discord needs them touching. Paste the line into the remover to take the stray characters out without retyping it.

Can moderators see what I did?

Anyone can copy your name into our detector and see exactly which characters it contains. This hides your name from view, not from inspection.
