Invisible Text for Facebook

An invisible character is a real character that shows nothing on screen, which is how a comment that looks completely empty, a name with no last name, or a gap inside a post is made. Copy one here and paste it in.

Choose a different character

If the first one gets removed, try the next one down. They fail in different ways, so the second often works where the first did not.

How to post a blank comment

  1. Press Copy above. One press copies one character.
  2. Open the comment box. On the post you want to comment on.
  3. Paste. Nothing will appear, but the Post or send button should stop being greyed out. That change is your confirmation that something is really in the box.
  4. Post it. The comment appears with no visible text.
  5. Reload the page and look again. This is the step people skip. A comment can look right the moment you post it and be cleaned up by the time anyone else loads the thread.

Why an ordinary space will not do this. The comment box treats a space as nothing and stays disabled, so there is no way to post it. An invisible character is not whitespace, so the box counts it as real text and lets it through — while the reader still sees an empty comment.

Where this works on Facebook, and where it does not

The blank last name, and why it often refuses

Facebook checks your name against a real-name policy as well as a character rule, and it is far fussier than a bio or a comment box. Three things get in the way, and they are worth knowing before you spend an attempt:

Because of all three, treat a blank name as the thing you try last, after you have confirmed in a comment that the character survives at all on your account.

If it did not work

Work down this list in order — the first two account for most of it.

Still stuck? Check whether the character survived — that tool runs the usual tidy-ups against your text and reports which ones changed it.

Common questions

Can I really post a completely empty comment?

Yes, in the sense that nobody sees any text. The comment is not actually empty — it contains one character that happens to show nothing, which is what lets it be posted at all.

Why is the Post button greyed out?

Nothing landed in the box. Either the copy did not take or the paste did not. Copy again and watch the button rather than the box, because the box will look identical either way.

Can I make my last name blank?

Sometimes. It is the strictest field covered on this site, the rules have differed by country and account for years, and name changes are rate-limited, so a failed attempt has a real cost. Confirm the character works in a comment first.

Can I make my profile link blank?

No, and neither can anyone else. Usernames accept only letters, numbers and full stops, so no invisible character fits.

My gap between paragraphs keeps closing up.

Every line you want left empty needs its own character pasted onto it. One character holds open one line, not the whole post.

Will this get my account in trouble?

A blank comment or a spaced-out post is ordinary and very widely done. A name with nothing visible in it is the part that draws attention, because it is checked against a real-name policy. If you are cautious, keep at least one visible character in your name.

Will it still be there next month?

Usually, but nothing here is promised. Facebook changes how it cleans up text without announcing it. If something collapses one day, paste it into the detector to see whether the characters are gone or merely changed.
