Invisible Text for WhatsApp
A message that looks completely empty is a message made of an invisible character — a real character that shows nothing on screen. Copy one here, paste it into the message box and send.
Made in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing you copy is uploaded, stored or logged.
How to send a blank message
- Press Copy above.
- Tap inside the message box first. The box has to have focus before a paste registers, on both iPhone and Android.
- Paste. Nothing appears, but the send button should light up. That is your confirmation the paste landed.
- Send it. The message arrives looking empty.
- Check what arrived, not what you typed. An empty bubble means it worked. A bubble with a visible gap in it means you copied an ordinary space somewhere along the way.
Why a space does not work
WhatsApp refuses to send a message made only of spaces. Press space a few times and the send button stays dead.
The character here is not a space as far as the app is concerned — it is filed as a symbol. So WhatsApp treats the message as real, sends it, and it arrives looking blank.
The other places it works
The message box is the usual reason people come here, but the same character goes into several other fields.
- Your About text. A blank About leaves the line under your name empty rather than showing the default “Hey there! I am using WhatsApp”.
- Group subjects and descriptions. A group whose name appears empty in your chat list. Note that everyone in the group can see who changed the subject, so this is hidden but not anonymous.
- Your own name. Worth knowing before you bother: people who have you saved in their contacts see the name they gave you, not the one you set. A blank name is only seen by people who have not saved your number.
One field it will never work in is your phone number. That is not a text box — it is the address the message is delivered to, and it only holds digits.
What usually goes wrong on WhatsApp
Five things account for nearly every failed attempt.
- The send button stays grey. The paste did not land. Tap inside the message box first, then paste.
- It sends, but shows a space. You copied an ordinary space instead, probably from somewhere else in between. Come back and press Copy again.
- It works in chat but not in your About text. The About field is stricter. Try a second character from the list, or two of them together.
- The About text refuses a long run of them. About has a character limit and every invisible one counts against it exactly like a letter.
- It works on your phone but not on WhatsApp Web. The paste is going through your computer’s clipboard rather than your phone’s, so copy it again in the browser you are actually using.
Worth knowing: an empty-looking message is still a message. It shows as delivered, it can be replied to, it notifies the other person exactly as a normal message does, and anyone can paste it into the detector and see exactly what you sent. Sending a lot of them to someone who has not asked for them is the fastest way to get blocked.

Can the other person tell?
They see an empty message bubble. If they copy it into a tool like our detector, it will show exactly which character you used.
Does it still send a notification?
Yes. As far as WhatsApp is concerned it is an ordinary message, so it buzzes their phone and shows in their list like any other. It is invisible to read, not silent to receive.
Does this work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. It is the same character either way — nothing is installed and nothing depends on your phone.
Does it work on WhatsApp Business?
The message box behaves the same way. Automated greeting and away messages are a different matter, since those are typed into a settings screen that may tidy the text before storing it.
Can I use it in a status update?
A text status made only of invisible characters generally posts, and shows as an empty coloured card. Whether it is worth posting is another question.
